A Snipd alternative for iPhone

Both apps put AI in a podcast player. They solve different problems, and the honest answer to "which one" depends entirely on what goes wrong for you while you listen.
Snipd is for keeping what you heard. Highlights, chapter summaries, exports into your notes.
Unpack is for understanding what you heard. A term you do not know, explained in context, out loud, without stopping.
What Snipd does well
Credit where it is due. Snipd saves a moment with a triple tap on your headphones, keeps the transcript and a summary with it, generates chapters and mini summaries, lets you ask questions about an episode, and exports cleanly into Notion, Readwise, Obsidian and Markdown. It runs on Android as well as iPhone. If you are building a knowledge base out of podcasts, that is the tool.
What Unpack does instead
Unpack assumes the problem is not remembering the good part. The problem is the term that went past three sentences ago that you did not follow.
- Definitions from the surrounding transcript. Roughly thirty seconds of context decide which meaning is right. "UGC" in a marketing episode is user generated content, not a country code.
- An AirPods head shake. Shake to ask, nod to pick a term, listen to the answer. Hands stay where they are.
- Siri, screen off. "Hey Siri, define that in Unpack" works with the phone in your pocket.
- A vocabulary that comes back. Every lookup enters a glossary and returns days later as a short quiz, spaced so it sticks.
- Terms marked before you ask. Once it has learned what you already know, the live transcript marks the terms it expects to be new to you.
- On-device first. Definitions are generated by Apple's on-device model before anything goes to a server, and you can switch the server path off completely.
Where Snipd is the better choice
Do not switch if any of these matter to you:
- You use Android, or you want the same account on a laptop.
- Your podcast notes have to land in Notion, Readwise or Obsidian.
- You want AI chapters and episode summaries before you press play.
- You listen mostly in a language other than English, Spanish, German or French.
Unpack does none of that, and adding it is not on the plan.
What about Overcast, Pocket Casts and Apple Podcasts?
They are good players. Overcast has better audio processing, Pocket Casts has a deeper feature set, Apple Podcasts is already on your phone. None of them will tell you what a word means while the episode is running. If the player is your problem, stay where you are. If the words are your problem, that is what Unpack is for.
Moving over takes one file: export an OPML from whichever app you use now and import it on first run.
Honest limits before you download
- iPhone only, iOS 26 or later. No iPad, Mac, Apple Watch or CarPlay version.
- The app interface is in English. Definitions, transcription and spoken readback follow the podcast's own language for English, Spanish, German and French.
- Free accounts get ten lookups a day and one review quiz session a day. The player, downloads, Siri, the sleep timer and the glossary are not limited.
- Premium adds unlimited lookups, unlimited review sessions, the AirPods head gesture, live transcript highlighting and comprehension quizzes during playback.
- No note export, no chapter generation, no episode chat.

Can I run both?
Yes, and some people should. They do not compete for the same moment. One saves what was said, the other explains it.
Is the definition quality held back on the free tier?
No. Free and premium get the same context-aware definition. Only the daily counts and the hands-free and highlighting features differ.
Does Unpack need an account?
No sign-up is needed to use the player and the lookups. Your glossary and history stay on the device.
